Sagya Monastery in Tibet

When you plan to have Tibet travel, first you will know some place worth visiting. Here we will talk about one of the most famous monastery called Sagya Monastery.

Located on the mountain in Sagya Country of Tibet Autonomous Region, Sagya Monastery is the main Sagyapas Temple of Tibetan Buddhism. In Tibetan words "Sagya" means "off-white earth". The monastery was first built in 1268 at which time some Han artisans also participated in the construction. After extension and renovation many times in history, the monastery looks grand surrounded by high walls with a square flat of a total area of 14760 square meters.

Sagya Monastery basically modelled the ancient city style of Han area which is good defensive  and walled city. The moats is still vaguely seen. Inner parts is palace and monks' apartment. The main hall is about 10 meters high that can accommodate nearly 10000 Lama chanting sutras. The historical relics in Sagya Monastery are very rich that can regard as a historical testimony about  relationship between local Tibetan and central government. That's why the Sagya Monastery is also well known for "the second Dunhuang".

Sagya Monastery will hold many Buddhist activities every year. Among them the most unique and largest-scale one is the God Vajra Dancing Dharma hold in each summer and winter of Tibetan calendar. The summer one will starts in each July and the winter one always begins in November of Tibetan calendar. If you plan to have China and Tibet travel want to celebrate local festivals with locals you can  choose that time. But it's better for you travel by train especially Tibetan Railway that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way.
