Yarlung Zangbo River


When talked about Tibet travel, travelers always think of the great river called Yarlung Zangbo River. Located in the Tibet autonomous region, Yarlung Zangbo River is the highest river in China as well as in the world. It originates from the Jemaa Ozon glacier in the south foot of Himalayas which upstream is called Maquan River that flows from west to east across the whole southern Tibet and then passes the Mount Namjagbarwa to the south, goes trough Pasighat and out of China at last.

The reserves of hydroenergy in Yarlung Zangbo River is the second richest in China after Yangtze River. Yarlung Zangbo Canyon is the deepest and longest canyon in the world. With a total length of 2840 km , the Yarlung Zangbo River means "the snow-broth flows from the highest peak" in ancient Tibetan words. Tibetans believe in Buddhism devotedly. Where there are Buddhism believers, there are temples. Since ancient times they have built so many temples. In the valley of Yarlung Zangbo Canyon stands temples everywhere. Whether near the bank of streams or deep in the mountain and forest, the melodious monastery bells can be herd by people. Among all the famous monasteries the most representative ones are the Potala Palace and Tashilhunpo. The dragon-like river is the mother river for Tibetans and the origin of human culture at the same time.

If you want to have China and Tibet travel to visit the Yarlung Zangbo Canyon, first you should arrive Lhasa. You can choose Tibetan Railway or from other places in China. Travel from Beijing to Lhasa or take train from Shanghai to Lhasa both are good routes for you.
