a brief introduction of Sakya Monastery

Before or during your Tibet tours, especially, your Everest Base Camp Tour, you may be obsessed with the question of how to get to Tibet and how to travel in Tibet. As for how to travel in Tibet, I am sure you should visit some famous monasteries. Today, I’d like to share you some information on Sakya Monastery. Sakya Monastery locates on the southwest of Shigatse and the word “sakya” means gray and white land. The monastery was built in 1268 and it was destroyed by fire. Upon years’ restoration, it was finally restored to its original appearance. With an area of 45,000 square meters, it is a big monastery. There are watchtowers at the four corners and precious cultural relics such as exquisite murals, statues, embroidery, Buddhist classics written in different languages. The walls of the monastery are painted in three colors: red, white and gray representing Manjushri, Mother Buddha and Buddha Vajradhara correspondingly. The Buddhists who believe in Sakya branch are allowed to get married and have children and the political power in the religion is inherited from father to son, while the religious power is inherited from uncle to nephew.
